Bacterial Fungal And Viral Cultures

TESTS

Bacterial, Fungal and Viral Cultures

If a patient is suspected of having a bacterial or fungal infection, a blood culture may be requested to test their blood. A complete blood count (CBC) may also be requested in order to determine whether a person has an increased number of white blood cells – this could indicate an infection. There are three types of cultures: solid, liquid and cell. In a solid culture, bacteria and fungi grow on a surface; a liquid culture is most commonly used to diagnose a parasite infection through a liquid nutrient mixture; and a cell culture uses human and animal cells to test how a cell is infected. In some cases, a chemistry panel or a urine, sputum or cerebrospinal fluid culture may also be requested to identify the source of the infection in the body. If an infection is detected, treatment will begin immediately.
