Waldenstroms Macroglobulinemi

CONDITIONS

Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemi

Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemi is a slow-growing form of cancer that affects white blood cells formed within the bone marrow and lymph nodes. It is usually diagnosed in patients over the age of 50, and it is less often seen in African Americans than in white Americans. While its cause is not known, indications are that inherited genes, some autoimmune diseases and Hepatitis C may all increase a person’s risk for the disease. Typical symptoms can include anemia, night sweats, weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, bleeding from the gums and fatigue. Treatment is primarily via chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation.
