Spinal Deformities - Pediatric

Our physicians provide expert evaluation and treatment for a wide variety of pediatric spinal deformities. Two of the best-known spinal deformities occurring in children are scoliosis and kyphosis, which are abnormalities of the spine’s curvature. A third type of spinal deformity is called spondylolisthesis, which occurs when one vertebral bone slips forward over another, causing possible instability. Kids with a spinal deformity may have an irregular gait, lower back pain, or a noticeable “hump” in their back. In most cases, the earlier that these abnormalities are detected and treated, the better the long-term outcome. While surgery is usually the last option considered in pediatric spine care, noninvasive therapies such as bracing and/or physical therapy are the front-line approach to helping patients.
