Spinal Arthritis

Spinal arthritis (or osteoarthritis) is the most frequently diagnosed musculoskeletal condition in patients who complain of back or neck pain. If you are an athlete or if you have a job that requires you to repeatedly lift heavy objects by hand, you have an elevated risk of developing this condition. Likewise, those of advanced age (particularly post-menopausal women) along with those who are overweight, who have a family history of osteoarthritis or spine defects, or who have an underlying disease such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are at greater risk for spinal arthritis. Treatments for spinal arthritis focus on reducing pain and stiffness while preventing further damage to the vertebral joints. For example, modifying one’s daily activities to provide ample rest for painful joints when needed, applying heat and cold therapy to affected areas, taking pain and anti-inflammatory medications and performing targeted exercises to strengthen core muscles are all nonsurgical options for treating spinal arthritis.
