Scarlet Fever

CONDITIONS

Scarlet Fever

Scarlet fever is a bacterial infection that sometimes occurs in patients with Strep throat, with the highest likelihood of occurrence in kids aged 5-15. While easily treated with antibiotic medications, this illness can lead to serious complications, so it’s important to seek medical evaluation when a patient with a sore throat also develops a sunburn-like rash that spreads from the face and neck region to the arms, legs and torso. The patient’s tongue will also display bumpy patches that may be coated with white. Other symptoms may include swallowing problems, inflamed and tender lymph nodes in the neck, nausea and a fever of 101 degrees F along with chills. Children diagnosed with scarlet fever can resume normal activities and will not be contagious after their fever has subsided and they have been taking their prescribed antibiotic medication for a minimum of 24 hours.
