Rasmussens Syndrome

CONDITIONS

Rasmussen's Syndrome

Rasmussen’s syndrome – also known as Rasmussen’s encephalitis – is classified as an autoimmune disorder in which one hemisphere of the brain becomes inflamed, potentially causing it to break down. Left untreated, chronic inflammation in this area may cause irreversible damage that is evidenced by seizures and weakness on one side of the body, cognitive dysfunction and other symptoms – with seizures being the most obvious side effect. Patients diagnosed with intractable Rasmussen’s syndrome may experience increasing paralysis on one side along with continued mental deterioration. In such cases, surgery in the form of a hemispherectomy may be considered.
