Obstructed Airway Babies

CONDITIONS

Obstructed Airway in Babies

An airway obstruction is a blockage in the windpipe that prevents air from entering the body. There are many conditions and events that can cause a total or partially obstructed airway in a baby, including inhaling or swallowing a foreign object, allergic reaction, vocal cord problems, breathing in smoke, viral infections, bacterial infections, swelling of the tongue or epiglottis, abscesses, asthma and bronchitis. An obstruction should be suspected when a child has blue lips or skin color, is unconsciousness, has rapid or shallow breathing, or emits decreased breath sounds, high-pitched breathing/wheezing sounds or has stopped breathing. In cases where a partial obstruction can't be removed with the Heimlich maneuver or CPR, tests such as X-rays, bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy and CT scans may be required to determine what is causing it.
