Narcolepsy

CONDITIONS

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is characterized by the irresistible need to sleep for brief periods during the daytime. This condition is caused by a problem with the brain’s ability to successfully regulate sleep-wake cycles. Concurrent symptoms of narcolepsy include the loss of voluntary muscle tone, hallucinations during and immediately following sleep periods, and episodes in which the patient feels briefly paralyzed during these same times. While no specific cause of narcolepsy has been discovered and no cure currently exists for it, two of its most difficult symptoms – excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy (loss of muscle tone) – can be successfully managed with the proper medication.
