MRI-Negative or Non-Lesional Epilepsy

A small minority of epilepsy patients have a condition that is hard to define because of the inability to see the focal point or lesion on an MRI. This condition is often referred to as MRI negative or non-lesional epilepsy. With most forms of epilepsy, doctors are able to view certain areas of the brain that may be causing seizures and other epileptic side effects via the MRI. But with MRI negative or non-lesional epilepsy, the MRI result doesn’t show a lesion or specific area that may be affected. As a result, both pre-surgery evaluation and treatment can be difficult and challenging. Surgery is still recommended to treat the problems associated with this condition, but a doctor who specializes in this particular area should provide treatment.
