Mastocytosis

Mastocytosis is a disorder that occurs when there are too many mast cells in the body. Mast cells help your immune system defend tissues from disease and play a part in healing wounds on and in the body. These cells can be found in the skin (cutaneous) and lymph nodes, as well as in internal organs (systemic), including the linings of the lung, stomach and intestines. Symptoms of mastocytosis include flushing, itching, abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting, ulcers, diarrhea and itching. Antihistamines are commonly used to help manage the inflamed skin conditions, and are often paired with other oral medicine to treat systemic side effects. In severe cases, mastocytosis can become cancerous, and may require steroids and/or chemotherapy to manage the condition and keep it from spreading.
