Male Menopause

While often considered a myth, male menopause simply refers to a change in a man’s hormone levels that occurs as a result of aging. Unlike the more dramatic drop in reproductive hormones seen in women during menopause, a man’s hormone production and testosterone availability declines very gradually over time. Symptoms of these changes may include declining energy levels and subtle mood changes that may or may not be noticed as they develop. Many physicians use the term “andropause” in reference to hormonal changes in men. Other names given to this gradually evolving condition include testosterone deficiency (or “low-T”), androgen deficiency and late-onset hypogonadism. By age 70, men can experience as much as a 70 percent decline in their testosterone levels.
