Labial Adhesion

CONDITIONS

Labial Adhesion

Labial adhesions refer to a urogynecological issue that occurs in females when the labia minora adhere together to form a shiny membrane of inflamed tissue. Labial adhesions can be both mild and severe, and often present no symptoms. Older girls may experience urinary dribbling, irritation or frequent urinary tract infections. The root cause of labial adhesions is unknown; however, estrogen may play a role. Chronic inflammation due to fecal soiling, eczema or dermatitis may also be a factor in the development of labial adhesions. Treatment will depend on how severe the adhesions are – some may heal during puberty while others may only require topical ointment. With significant adhesions, estrogen cream may be required along with steroid medication to help separate the labia. In very rare cases, surgery may be required if the adhesions don’t separate after using ointments.
