Imperforate Anus

CONDITIONS

Imperforate Anus

Imperforate anus is a condition in which the opening to the anus is missing or blocked. This birth defect usually develops during the fifth to seventh week of pregnancy. If this condition is detected, the muscles, nerves, spine and urogenital tract also need to be checked for any degree of abnormality. Spinal problems, heart problems, renal abnormalities and limb abnormalities are all common birth defects that can develop along with imperforate anus. Immediate surgery (often a perineal anoplasty or a colostomy) is usually required to open a passage for feces.
