Heel Callus

CONDITIONS

Heel Callus

Heel calluses develop due to added pressure placed on the heel, usually from wearing shoes that don’t have padding or support, or improper walking stance. This pressure causes the skin on the heel to thicken and form a callus that can cause pain, discomfort and irritation. In some cases, this callus can begin to crack and bleed. Most calluses can be treated by removing them via ointment or soaking, and by wearing more comfortable and supportive shoes. If the callus is more severe, surgery may be required to remove it and adjust the bone in the heel to decrease pressure when walking.
