Gallstones (Cholelithiasis)

Gallstones are an extremely common issue in adults, and gallstone removal (cholecystectomy) is one of the most often-performed surgeries. The stones are made up of solidified bile deposits and can cause significant discomfort, especially when they block a bile duct. A person who loses a significant amount of weight in a short time is at higher risk of developing gallstones, as is someone who often fasts, skips meals or is significantly overweight. Typical symptoms of gallstones include a stabbing pain in the upper right abdomen and/or on the upper back or right shoulder. Symptomatic gallstones are usually treated with medications that help dissolve them or by removing the gallbladder.
