Gallbladder Inflammation Cholecystitis

Gallbladder Inflammation (Cholecystitis)

Cholecystitis is characterized by an inflammation of the gallbladder that is typically due to gallstones but may also be tied to other issues such as duct problems or tumors. Typical symptoms may include severe abdominal pain and tenderness, nausea, fever and pain in the right shoulder/back. Without treatment, this condition can lead to a ruptured gallbladder, which is a potentially life-threatening situation. To reduce the inflammation and associated symptoms, treatments may include withholding food and drink for a period of time, antibiotic and pain medications and possibly a cholecystectomy procedure to remove the gallbladder.
