Cuts And Lacerations

CONDITIONS

Cuts and Lacerations

Your primary care physician can provide basic wound care for cuts and lacerations, including stitches or sutures for minor skin tears, thereby sparing you a trip to the emergency room. Such wounds are characterized by (not excessive) bleeding, pain, a jagged edge or puncture area and potential damage to muscles and other tissues. Treatment by your primary care physician may include cleaning (debriding) the wound; closing the wound with a bandage, sutures or other method; and properly dressing the wound. This may also be accompanied by a tetanus shot. Proper care for minor cuts and lacerations by your primary care physician can reduce the risk of infection and scarring while ensuring that any needed follow-up treatment is provided.
