Croup

CONDITIONS

Croup

Croup is an infection of the throat and upper respiratory system typically caused by a virus. Croup most commonly occurs in young children, and does not always need a physician’s care. Croup is characterized by the loud and “barking” cough, and other symptoms can include loud breathing, fever, hoarse voice, fatigue and irritability. For most children with croup, the chief concern is worsening symptoms that lead to an obstructed airway. You should seek emergency medical care if your child experiences difficulties breathing, which may be indicated by excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, high-pitched sounds when breathing, and a blue tint around the mouth, nose or fingernails.
