Childhood Seizures

Childhood seizures are usually associated with epilepsy, and can be something that kids grow out of over time. That said, anytime a child experiences a seizure, he or she should be evaluated by a physician with advanced knowledge of seizure disorders. Other possible causes of a seizure include traumatic brain injury, illicit drug use, a very high body temperature, low blood sugar or a disrupted flow of oxygen to the brain. Depending on the frequency and severity of a child’s seizures, treatment may include prescription anticonvulsant medications, lifestyle and nutritional modifications, and – when necessary – surgical procedures to disrupt abnormal signals going from one part of the brain to another and from the brain to other parts of the body.
