Bile Duct Obstruction

CONDITIONS

Bile Duct Obstruction

Bile duct obstructions occur when the tube that carries bile from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestines becomes blocked or narrowed. When this happens, the bile buildup in the liver causes the patient to turn yellow (jaundice) due to the high levels of bilirubin in the blood. Cysts, enlarged lymph nodes, gallstones, inflamed bile ducts, injuries, tumors and bile duct worms can all cause a bile duct obstruction. Symptoms may include abdominal pain in the upper right side, dark urine, fever, itching, jaundice, nausea and pale-colored stools. The goal of bile duct obstruction treatment is to remove the blockage and prevent further blockages from occurring – this may entail endoscopic procedures, surgery to remove the gallbladder or any cancerous tissue, and drainage.
